The Challenge

Top Canadian broadcaster Corus Entertainment has been at the forefront of video innovations since its founding in 1999. So when Flash deprecation began and online advertising via Google IMA became essential in more recent years, the company knew it was time to elevate its video strategy again. To ensure it successfully accomplishes this goal, it sought a professional solution to deliver video across its digital networks and to keep current with changing industry demands.

The Solution

Corus chose JW Player for its direct expertise in video. That specialization offered solutions such as: an HTML5 player that tightly integrates with Google IMA; closed captioning that was in line with regulations; and DRM playback to protect intellectual property.

JW Player technologies like these helped Corus prepare for the future. Given the amount of competition in the market, Corus is focused on moving away from outdated technology toward the best user experience possible. With constant product updates and support for potential initiatives like 360 video and virtual reality, JW Player put Corus ahead of the curve.

The Result

Since rolling out JW Player across its many networks, Corus has seen significant lifts in plays. Its network Slice.ca, for example, increased its views by 10.5%, and HGTV.ca achieved a 7% uptick within a 3-month period.

JW Player also greatly lightened the load for Corus’ technical team. The straightforward implementation simplified what could have been a time-consuming and manual process, freeing engineering resources for additional priorities. Due to JW Player’s excellent support services, Corus could send a ticket and get a response back the same day.
