Hiring Female: Bridging The Tech Gender Divide

Hiring Female: Bridging The Tech Gender Divide
3:01

A diverse workforce brings with it new creative energies and complementary leadership styles. However, many workplaces find it challenging to create equal representation at all levels in the organization. What are we missing when women aren't at the table tackling challenges?

Last week, we sat down with senior media leaders during Connatix’s first iteration of Hiring Female to discuss what it takes to create equal representation and make changes to attract and retain female talent. Here are the top takeaways from the discussion. Stay tuned for more events as we continue this important conversation!

Don’t be afraid to tackle ‘taboo’ topics

Whether it’s salary or topics of inclusivity, some subjects may feel taboo to talk about with peers and even your manager. However, it’s important to move these conversations forward! You are the driver of your future. Be proactive and don't assume others will be on your behalf. Don’t be afraid to ask the hard questions, voice what you want, and pay it forward through knowledge sharing.

Go outside of your comfort circle

Make a dedicated effort to grow your network outside of your team! Oftentimes, the people who you interact with on a daily basis have a similar personality to your own. It’s so important to form connections with people who may think differently, tackle problems differently, and have a different perspective. Not only will this help you to approach your work with a bias-free mentality, but it will also help you expand your network and infuse creative energy into your daily work.

Create the balance you want in your current role

Whether you are starting a family or seeking more balance, oftentimes women will look to change jobs when they aren’t achieving the balance they need. However, rather than immediately looking to make a move outside of your organization, try to drive that change with others in the organization and implement the balance you are looking for in your current role. Be honest with yourself, and ask for what you need before looking to make a move.

Bring diversity best practices in your recruiting process

Recruiting for diversity is a major conversation that tech organizations are having today, with different tactics and approaches. Ultimately, the first step is to have the conversation and be honest about where your team and organization stacks today. Try different methods to see what works for you - whether it's blind resumes or group interviews. An important goal to keep in mind is hiring for competency and skills first and foremost.

Don’t just focus on the top!

While it’s important to focus on the top and create equal representation at the leadership level, it’s equally as important to focus on the entry-level candidates who will create the next generation of talent at the organization. Look for ways to encourage diversity across all levels of the organization, from interns through to executive leadership.
